Saptariya Language
Mid-East Tharu are dwelling in Parsa, Bara, Tauthat, Sarlahi, Mahotari, Dhanusa, Siraha, Saptari, Udaypur, Sunsari, Morand and Jhapa districts of Nepal country. Average population of Mid-East Tharu is 2,62,300.
Language: Mid-East Tharu's mother toungue is Tharu.
Profession: Mid-East Tharu's main profession is an agreeculture. Some of them do bussiness. Some of them work in government offices. Some of them do politic.
Food: Rice, bread, beaten rice, fish, meat, milk, curd, gram, soybean, lentiles, vegetable, Jhuna, ghongi, crabe, sweet, fruits etc.
Uniform: Men wear kamij, dhoti, ganji, Lungi, kattu, langauti, tawel, pheta. Women wear kappa, saari, choliya, saiya. But now a days some of them wear shirt, pant, vest, coat, tie, half-pant, kurtha, suruwal, sal, scurt etc.
Religion: Some Tharu believe in Hindu religion. They celebrate tihar, phagu, ekadashi, sukrait, sirwa festivals. Some of them believe in Buddhism. They celebrate the birthday of Buddh. Some of them believe in Jesus [Christin religion]. Christians go to church once in week to do fellowship. They celebrate birthday of Jesus Christ [It is called Christmas] and Easter on the occasion of death and resurrection of Jesus Christ after three days.
Wedding: Most Tharus keep wedding relationship in their own cast. They do not keep wedding relationship with their lose relatives like fathers relatives and mothers relatives. but they can marry with sister of brother's wife. Long long ago there was Golat system in Tharu community. In this system, who had one son and one daughter, he had to search the other person who had one son and one daughter in his family to marry. He brought others daughter to marry with his son and he gave his daughter to marry with others son. At that time bride and bridegroom did not get chance to see each others before getting marriage. They had to obey their parraants and got ready to marry. Child marriage was done between boy and girl. Who had have daughters only they kept son -in-law at their home. Now a days this custom is in Tharu community.
Christians also do not marry with their close relatives but they can marry with any cast those who believe in Jesus. Boy should be 21 years old and girl should be 20 years old for marriage. Boy and girl must be virgin. Boy and girl, their parents, pastors and the members of both churches meet with each others. Boy and girl meet and talk with each others, like each others and ready to marry. Then boy and girl, their parents, their pastors and the members of both churches agree and fix the date of engagement. Then boy takes his pastor, believers and his relatives and go to girl’s home for engagement. Engagement program should be in girl’s home or church. After engagement, wedding date is being fixed. Then pastor performs holy wedding between boy and girl. Then bride and bridegroom exchange gold’s ring, bracelet etc with each others. Then pastor proclaims them as husband and wife in the name of God the Father, in the name of the son Jesus Christ and in the name of the Holy spirit and says, “what therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.”
Consecration of baby: When a Hindu lady gives birth to a baby, Chhatiyar [ritual thing] is done in sixth day. Brother’s of the baby’s mother first cuts off some hair of baby, then barber shaves the baby’s head and cuts off baby’s mother’s nail. Then the baby and baby’s mother are being purified. Some of them do Mathamurain.
But when a christian woman gives birth to a baby, consecration of bay is being in church. Pastor gives a sermon about why consecration should be done. Baby is a gift of God. Parents responsibility is to feed, to grow up, to treat and to teach the baby. Then pastor pray for the spiritual growth of the baby, for mental growth of the baby, for physical growth of the baby, for growth of wisdom and commits to the baby into God.
Funeral: If someone dies, younger or elder son of that man’s many sons wears Utri and stay to mourn. In course of mourning, Some relatives mourn for three days and shaves their hairs, beard, mustache and cut off nails. Some relatives mourn for 10 days and shaves their hairs, beard, mustache and cut off nails. Some relatives mourn for 13 days and shaves their hairs, beard, mustache and cut off nails.
When a christian dies, other Christians do not say he is dead but say he is sleeping. Because he will alive again in 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. Funeral service is done according to Christian system. They keep dead body inside the box and dig the ground and bury the dead body in tom with box.
